The Porsche Taycan Turbo and Turbo S wowed the automotive world back in September with three simultaneous unveilings of two very powerful, fully electric brand-new Porsche models. One of the most anticipated cars of 2019, the Porsche Taycan finally arrived with its two fastest – and most exclusive – versions. Now, we get a third Taycan version, one that is more accessible, still very powerful, and that offers plenty of range.
The Porsche Taycan 4S was unveiled a few weeks ago with the same twin permanent electric motors as the Turbo and Turbo S Taycan models. That means that it also offers all-wheel drive like its more expensive siblings. It also has the same sleek four-door design and state-of-the-art interior. Where it differs, however, is price. Starting at $119,400, the Porsche Taycan 4S is roughly $73,000 less than the Taycan Turbo and $93,000 less than the Taycan Turbo S.
Better yet, the lower price point doesn’t mean a sacrifice in terms of performance. The car’s battery is a tad smaller at 79.2-kWh, but it still provides 407 kilometres of range according to European WLTP standards. The Porsche Taycan 4S Performance Plus model will offer 463 kilometres of range according to the same standards. Peak charging power is rated at 225 kW while the Performance Plus can charge at 270 kW. Translation: you won’t have to wait very long to charge the Taycan 4S.
Technically, the Taycan 4S is very close to the Taycan Turbo and Turbo S. All three cars share the same inverters front and back and a rear two-speed transmission for faster starts paired with a front single-speed gearbox. Front brake calipers with six pistons are also standard as is Porsche’s adaptive air suspension.
The electric powertrain generates a total of 522 horsepower in the Taycan 4S and 562 horsepower in the Taycan 4S Performance Plus. That’s enough to reach 100 km/h in about 4.0 seconds which makes the Taycan 4S one of the fastest cars available with a Porsche crest. Only a handful of models not called Taycan can beat it to the line, and they are a lot more expensive. Think Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid or Porsche 911 Turbo.
In other words, the Porsche Taycan 4S is now the most accessible all-electric Porsche you can buy, and no one will argue it’s not worth the price tag. It has plenty of range, plenty of performance, looks amazing and drives really fast without needing a single drop of fuel.
The Porsche Taycan 4S will be available in summer 2020.
