Porsche has been leading the way in luxury vehicle electrification, but like everything Porsche does, they have been doing it without diluting or compromising on the brand’s DNA and identity.
When you step into a plug-in hybrid Porsche, any PHEV Porsche, you’re getting a more efficient powertrain that makes it possible to drive a certain distance in all-electric mode and not use any fuel. The rest of the car, from the design to how it behaves, is 100% Porsche.
Electrifying Performance From The Porsche Panamera 4 E-Hybrid
Better yet, Porsche engineers managed to find a way to use the battery to improve performance and optimize how the various electric and mechanical components work together. As many know, an electric engine delivers its torque almost instantaneously. For Porsche, this provided a solution and ensures optimum performance across the RPM range.
You wouldn’t expect anything less from the automaker who essentially invented the hybrid vehicle. Yes, Porsche wasn’t always about the 911 Turbo or GT2 RS. In 1900, Ferdinand Porsche unveiled to the world one of his first creations, the Lohner-Porsche Mixed Hybrid.
That model used a pair of single-cylinder engines paired with 2.5-kW generators. Today’s technology is more advanced as you would expect, but Porsche is still leading the way.
Powering the Porsche Panamera E-Hybrid is a combination of a twin-turbo 2.9-liter V6 engine found in the Panamera S and 4S paired with an electric motor. A 14.1-kWh battery powers the electric unit which delivers on its own 136 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. Total horsepower output is rated at 462 horsepower, a considerable increase over the previous Panamera E-Hybrid’s 416 hp.
All-wheel drive is standard, and the four wheels get their power from a ZF-sourced 8-speed automatic gearbox.
Thanks to the Panamera 4 E-Hybrid’s larger battery, it’s now possible to drive up to around 30 kilometers using just the electric motor. That means that you can drive it to and from work during the week and not use a single drop of fuel if you live within a 30-kilometer radius. At night, you’ll need around 2.5 hours to charge the E-Hybrid using the 7.2 kW onboard charger and a 240V outlet.
Even if you need to drive more than 30 kilometers, you’ll still get impressive fuel economy numbers despite driving a premium performance sedan that can reach 100 km/h in less than 5.0 seconds.
Owners can also modify how the Panamera 4 E-Hybrid behaves thanks to a variety of drive modes including E-Power, E-Hold and E-Charge as well as Sport and Sport Plus. Each mode uses the hybrid powertrain differently and modifies the input of the electric motor and charging of the battery.
