Porsche has mastered the art of duplicating its DNA and applying it to any type of vehicle. Very few automakers if any have managed to recreate the driving experience and feel of their flagship vehicle across their entire lineup regardless of body type like Porsche.
It all started with the Cayenne 12 years ago, but it didn’t end there. The Panamera proved that a sedan could drive and handle like a Porsche just like the Cayenne proved that an SUV could actually be sporty. The Porsche Macan was the next step in Porsche’s model development and like the Cayenne before it, the Macan has exceeded every expectation bestowed upon it since its arrival. It’s now Porsche’s best-selling model worldwide.
The Porsche Macan has been refreshed for 2019 much like the rest of the Porsche lineup. A new, more digital interior awaits the buyer in every Macan, and more performance is on tap in every version. Like the previous Macan, a base model along with a Turbo version are available. Expect a GTS model down the road which will slot between the Turbo and the subject of this particular article, the Porsche Macan S.
Why focus solely on the Macan S? Well, it’s probably the most balanced of the Macan versions and will likely appeal to the most buyers. The Porsche Macan S hits that sweet spot where usable power meets daily drivability and value. The Macan S isn’t as fast as the Macan Turbo, but with a 0-100 km/h time of 5.3 seconds, most will probably agree it’s fast enough. Better yet, a starting price of $63,600 puts it within reach. That’s a full $30,000 less than the Macan Turbo and although the later can do things the Macan S can’t in terms of performance, the S version remains the most powerful Porsche you can buy for the money. That’s saying a lot.
Powering the Porsche Macan S is a 3.0-litre turbocharged V6 with 348 horsepower and 352 pound-feet of torque paired to a dual-clutch PDK gearbox sending power to all four wheels. Not only is the Macan S quick from a stop, it’s also lighting fast from 80 to 120 km/h with a time of just 3.6 seconds. In broader terms, the Macan S will pounce forward with the speed of a Porsche Cayman when you need to pass or get out of the way. It’s pure Porsche power combined with agile driving dynamics, sharp handling and impressive agility.
Of course, the Macan S like its brothers is also quite spacious with up to 1,500 litres of total cargo space. That’s quite a lot of space for a vehicle with an overall footprint that’s urban-friendly. The Macan S is an SUV, sure, but it doesn’t look, feel or perform like one. No wonder it’s so popular with Porsche enthusiasts and newcomers to the brand alike.
