Porsche 911 Carrera S: One Letter That Makes a World of Difference

The Porsche 911 lineup is packed with a wide range of versions, trims, and models that ultimately provide something for everyone. There’s not one need or one desire that can’t be met within the 911 family. From leading the pack on the track to conquering your commute in winter, there’s a 911 tailored to your lifestyle. In this article, we focus on the Carrera S, Carrera 4S and Targa 4S.

That “S” may just be one letter, but it brings with it a level of performance that will feel more dialed in than ever and represents for many owners the perfect compromise. That said, the word compromise is the last thing that comes to mind behind the wheel of a Porsche 911 Carrera S, 4S or Targa 4S.

An Extra 50 Horsepower Under Your Right Foot

Both base 911 models and S variants feature a H6 3.0-liter six-cylinder turbocharged engine. The difference is that while the entry-level version of this engine develops 370 horsepower and 331 pound-feet of torque, the S version gets 420 horsepower and 368 pound-feet of torque.

Top speed increases to 308 km/h while the 0-to-100 km/h sprint requires just 4.2 seconds. A 911 Carrera S starts at $120,000 while a 4S starts at $127,900. A convertible 911 Carrera S will start at $134,000. There’s therefore plenty of bang for your buck, both literally and figuratively.

Of course, the 911 Carrera S isn’t the fastest 911 you can buy. Not even close as a matter of fact. For many buyers, however, it represents the perfect balance. Noticeably more powerful than entry-level 911s, the S is still much more user-friendly than a Turbo  or GT3. Those are fantastic machines, but they may just be a little too extreme for daily use.

The GTS models on the other hand provide plenty of power and an exhaust note that sticks with you in your dreams, but again some buyers may feel that they are too noticeable, or too track-focused. Obviously, it’s a matter of opinion and ultimately the 911 lineup’s most discerning feature is its variety, but for many buyers the Carrera S’ balance is the way to go.

You’ll have plenty of performance under your right foot in any situation, but you can also drive your Carrera S, 4S or Targa 4S on your way to work every morning while making your calls and sipping your coffee.
